Any successful business, no matter how large or small, has one thing in common. They are all based on the objective of profit. Every business owner strives to buy low and sell high. This article will be about the first half of the equation... buying low.
The normal buying process for any corporation includes a myriad of different buying sources for the various requirements Not only the finished products, but also supplies and raw material etc., must be purchased. For the purposes of this article, we will keep it simple. Consider a simple trading business, for instance,, where no manufacturing or processing is involved, just buying and selling.
The items to be purchased could come from a variety of sources, such as manufacturers, agents, importers, liquidators, distributors, and wholesalers. Buying Wholesale
To date, the channels of distribution have evolved enormously and the process is ever ongoing. Once upon a time, all steps in the cycle of product distribution, from the manufacturer to the consumer, were considered important. Every step involved a markup of the product price in order to maintain the margin for the entity currently handling the product, thereby greatly enhancing its final price. In an effort to reduce these markups recently the steps have started to overlap and grow myopic. Regardless of the steps that may have been bypassed, the objective continues to remain the same, to get the products to the consumer at the minimum price possible. Because of this, the wholesale buying sources have now been reduced to only wholesalers, liquidators, and importers. When buying from these sources, you are in actuality simply buying from a discounted retailer. Some of the confusion can be avoided when we see many internet sellers claiming wholesale prices; they are not really wholesalers but simply discounted retailers. You can tell if a retailer is a wholesale because of the fact that, when you buy from a legitimate wholesaler, you will be asked to provide your sales tax ID.
Wholesalers: With wholesalers, the first option would be to buy from a wholesaler that stocks the type of merchandise you need. The process is easy, simply create an account and begin making purchases. It is recommended that you open accounts with more than one wholesaler in order to take advantage of all of the price fluctuations and other various schemes they will offer from time to time; moreover, this will give you more sources, in case the merchandise stock runs out with one wholesaler.
Liquidators: Purchasing merchandise from liquidators is likely to be the cheapest wholesale source of new merchandise. Liquidators are very different from wholesalers or distributors in that they do not consistently stock the same items. They will normally purchase items from various sources that include slow moving goods, off-season supplies, end-of-run products, and goods from traders who have gone bankrupt. As a result, they have will have more variety, but much less consistency.
Importers: One of your best for new products at wholesale or lower prices, importers normally tend to be very product or industry specific. General merchandise importers are somewhat uncommon. Importers generally work with large product volume and may have a policy of refusing low volume buyers.
Manufacturers: Another very important and reasonably cheap buying source is manufacturers. This includes farmers, growers, and craftspeople.
Factory direct: Buying factory direct items is by far the cheapest source for buying goods, because it does not involve any middle-men like agents, wholesalers, or distributors. However, for a small trader, buying factory direct is not easy, since manufacturers want to sell high volumes. Despite this, since the creation of the internet, the process of buying any product from anywhere, directly from the manufacturers, has become much easier.
Various issues such as fair price, terms of purchase, product quality, and supplier reliability must to be dealt with before moving on to finalizing any purchase via the internet.
Auction sites: This auction sites provide many wonderful opportunities for consumers to purchase products at wholesale pricing. These can be found under the Wholesale link. That page contains numerous categories and sub-categories of items for sale.
